Syllabus
Over the 10 weeks, we'll focus on several key questions:
What is anthropology?
What makes us human?
What do we know of humanity's prehistoric existence?
How do we find and interpret evidence from the distant past?
What can language tell us about prehistory?
How is culture related to other human circumstances?
Does culture create people, or do people create culture?
What does it take to engage with different cultures respectfully?
How do anthropologists gather information about cultural differences?
Course objectives: By the end of the 10 weeks, my goal is for each of you to be able to answer these questions correctly, at least at an introductory level.
Note that this is a hybrid class. We will meet regularly on Mondays and Wednesdays. The hybrid part of the class will be a combination of assigned film viewing, occasional "field work" in the real world, and work online on Blackboard.
