Week 4           Archaeology

Acheulean

The Acheulean is characterized by discoids, flakes, retouched flaked, and the enigmatic hand axe. Hand axes define the industry. These tools are symmetrical, shaped like a pointy or ovoid tear drops. Symmetry, although pretty minimal at first, is apparent by around 1.7 mya. It is important to remember that Oldowan assemblages continue to be produced (up to the present time, it turns out!). The acheulean develops in Africa only for a long time. Based on know evidence, at 1 million years ago Africa was the center of Homo erectus population and activity. The earliest Acheulean sites in Eurasia only appear around 0.5 mya. In addition, the Acheulean tradition does not seem to spread to eastern Eursia.
