Approximate age:133,000 years old=average of minimum (0.116 Ma) and maximum (0.15 Ma)

Date based on: U-series See map of sites with similar ages

Dating reference: Tiemei, C., & Yinyun, Z. (1991). Palaeolithic chronology and possible coexistence of Homo erectus and Homo sapiens in China. World archaeology, 23(2), 147-154.

Hominids: Homo erectus (advanced erectus)

Archaeology:Oldowan/undiagnostic

Important specimens: cranium

Notes: Dates on calcite and bone corroborate each other. Maba cranium is difficult to classify. It is much larger-brained (~1400cc) than classic Homo erectus and has none of the derived features of Neanderthals. It is classified here as advanced Homo erectus, but could be referred Homo heidelbergensis depending on the nature of the transition from Homo erectus to more advanced Homo in eastern Eurasia. Archaeology reference: Zhenguo, H., & Weiqiang, Z. (2002). The relative stability of prehistorical geographic environment in China's tropics on the basis of archaeology. Journal of Geographical Sciences, 12(4), 460-466.

Location: (Mapa), Lion Rock (狮子山), Maba Man Relic Park, Shidushan Hill, Shaokuan Municipality (Chuchiang District), Kwantung Province, Guangdong, China
Map location/coordinates reference: Map point is centered on the courtyard adjacent to the Maba Man Relic Park, just north of Lion Rock (狮子山), which overlies the cave in which the cranium was recovered.

Fossilized.org presents precise geographic locations and current best date estimates for late Miocene, Pliocene, and Pleistocene sites with human ancestor (hominin) fossils and archaeology. Several interactive visual interfaces allow users to generate maps and tables that relate localities, fossils, tools, and evolutioanry events with geography and time. The data content is dynamic and is updated daily, as are new interface features. This site started as a course syllabus for Anthropology 3101: Human Evolution 2 at California State University, East Bay, and grew with each quarter it was used. Now fossilized.org has over 200 sites and hundreds of bibliographic citations.
